Cookies

It was a yummy day at One Smart Cookie!

As always we started our morning play date by shaking our sillies out and singing our welcome song. This morning while we waited for all of our friends to arrive I fitted each kiddo with a chef's hat made out of tissue paper and sentence strips. If you don't have sentence strips you can always you tag board.

After our chef hats were fitted and we sang our songs, we read a fun book about cookies. If you have never read "Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar?" By Bonnie Lass & Philemon Sturges make sure to check it out. The book has great animal references and also is a book that gives clue to what could be coming next. It is a great story to a fun musical tune and who doesn't love reading about cookies!

Not only did we read about cookies but we baked cookies. Baking with toddlers is a great way to teach and interact with your child. It may not be the easiest or cleanest process, but most kids love it and I think it is a great thing to do with you little ones. The things you do now are teaching them skill for the future! I hope someday my girls will cook and bake mommy and daddy some yummy food. Because there are multiple children at our play group, I split the ingredients into smaller measurements so each kid could put all the ingredients in their bowl. This does take longer, but I want each kid to feel like they really are baking and being "Chef Adeline or Chef Edward." After all our ingredients were prepared each toddler got to scoop their cookie dough onto the pan. I popped them in the oven and the kids headed outside to play. Before each momma and kiddo went home, they had baggies of cookies to take with them. A little secret! I pre-made a batch of cookies just incase ours did not turn out. I wanted to make sure that we had cookies to eat while we had others waiting to bake in the oven.

We had a great and yummy morning! Check out the other cookie ideas for the week to continue playing and learning with cookies.

1. More Cookie Literature.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie By: Laura Numeroff or The Doorbell Rang By: Pat Hutchins

2. Counting Cookie Cards

Number BIG recipe cards or pieces of construction paper from 1 - 10. Cut out brown circles and glue to each one of the cards. Use real chocolate chips to let child count out the number of chocolate chips that should go on each card. Don't forget to let your little one snack a chip or two!

3. Shaving Cream Paint Cookie

Mix 3/4 cup white shaving cream and 1/4 liquid white glue add brown paint and let your child mix and explore with their hands. While your child is playing cut out small brown circles of construction paper for the chocolate chips. When they are done exploring have them spread the "cream paint" on to a paper plate and add the paper chips. Let the plate dry!

4. Dramatic Play

Use felt or cardboard to create your own cookies. Brown to create the cookies and colors to create fun frosting, sprinkles or chips.

5. Take a Field Trip

Why not have a special day to take a special trip! Go to a local bakery and let your child pick out their very own cookie! Go to a park or lake and have a picnic and enjoy your cookie treat. We often forget that kids love doing things that they don't do on a daily basis.
